Chapter 18
Our son, Blane Tyler Thomas was kept in hospital for 2 weeks before they released him, happy and healthy.
They told me I was extremely lucky and had I not given birth in the water, he may not have survived. I don’t know what would have happened if Akala hadn’t come along when she did. I am so grateful everyday she did.
While I was giving birth in the lake, Lizzy went into labour herself.
After 23 hours she gave birth to my beautiful nieces, Jazmine Hope and Lily Faith.
Both girls were healthy, unlike my poor sister who was in a lot of pain. The birth was hard on her little body. The doctors wanted to keep her in hospital for a few weeks, but of course my stubborn sister would have none of that. Thought Nathan was none to please, he accepted his wife’s wishes and took all his girls home. He hired a nanny to help with the girls so Lizzy didn’t have to do it all.
Nathan was so worried about her, as she wasn’t recovering well. She wouldn’t do as she was told and stay in bed. The twins and Blane were a month old when one day he snuck over to my place. I had just put mu son down for a nap when he came in “Chloe, I need your help” he said, his eyes tearing up. He told me about Lizzy and that as he had to work he could keep and eye on her. I grabbed him and gave him a reassuring hug “Nathan, don’t worry. I will hire a nanny and work on your farm, like I did before Blane was born. Please don’t worry about Lizzy, she is tough, and the farm will be fine.”
Nathan sighed in relief “Thank-you Chloe, you don’t know what this means to me” he cried. I laughed “Yes Nathan, I think I do; besides you would do the same for me”.
That night, after Jakob and I had kissed and cuddled our little man and put him to bed, we went down to the lounge for our nightly talk and snuggle. I told him how Nathan had com over, worried about Lizzy and what I said I would do. Jakob was less then impressed “Chloe” he said angrily “why can’t Nathan just hire a hand? Why do you have to do it?” I wrapped my arms around his neck, jumped into his lap and kissed him
“I love it when you worry about me. You have this cute little look on your face” I said with sincerity “But Jakob I know that farm, I worked it since I was a child. I know you are worried about me, but I will be ok. I am only a phone call away. Besides I know Lizzy and Nathan needs to be with her”. Jakob looked me in the eyes “Oh god Chloe, I love you so much. I love the way you think of everyone around you, the way you care”.
He kissed me soundly, I moaned into his kiss, he picked me up and carried me upstairs to our bed. “Ok Chloe” he said “but I want you back with me, at my side, as soon as Lizzy is well”. We made love three times that night, waking up the next morning was very difficult indeed.
After I had feed Blane, had a shower and got dressed I rang the babysitting service for a nanny. They sent over Tyissa within half and hour. It was hard leaving Blane, I almost took him with me, but working outdoors is no place for an infant, after lots of hugs, kisses and more hugs I reluctantly handed him over to Tyissa.
She assured me he would be fine. That Jakob was not far away and she had my mobile number. With one last look at my son, I was out the door with max, heading over to Lizzy and Nathan’s farm.
I found my sister in the kitchen, drinking a coffee. I poured myself a cup and sat down in front to her.
I smiled at her and she looked at me shocked “What do I have toothpaste on my mouth?” I asked her questionaly. She laughed and shook her head “No, I am just wondering what you are doing here this early Chloe”. “Ahh” I smiled “So your hubby hasn’t told you?”
“Told who what” Nathan asked as he walked in, giving his now angry and confused wife a kiss. Lizzy glared at us both “Someone better tell me what is going on before I crack” she said. I laughed, picked up my cup and put it in the sink “this is all yours Nathan” I said giggling as I left.
I saw Nathan bending down in front of Lizzy, I had to laugh, poor guy is going to be in so much trouble.
I saddled Nathan’s horse, wildfire, called out for max to jump up and headed back down to the fence line. I smiled at the tree I had sat at weeks earlier with my son.
Max started to bark, so I let him down, following him seconds later.
I never did understand why, but max took off into some bushes (very unlike him) I guess I should have listened to my instincts, instead I ignored him. He came back 5 minutes later, whining. He collapsed 5 meters away from me. “Max” I called as I walked over to him “what happened boy?” I bent down to him; I saw two bites on his face, just under his left eye. It was a bite of a snake. I didn’t think. I ran over to wildfire and grabbed my gun. I ran into the bushes where Max had come from.
There curled up was an Eastern Brown Snake, their bite, Fatal.
I cocked my gun and fired, as I did I remembered the words my Father told me the first day he let me muster on my own “Chloe, listen to me carefully. If you see an Eastern Brown snake during mating season, be sure to look for its partner. As sure as hell girl, if you kill that snake, the partner will take revenge”. As I turned, I felt a bump and a sharp pain on my calf. I looked down to see the tail of a snake, the partner of the one I had just killed. I had less then 20 minutes to live. I calmly walked back to max, I picked him up and walked over to the tree. Leaning against it I closed my eyes. I thought of my husband Jakob and my beautiful son Blane, my sister Lizzy, my nieces Jazmine and Lily, of Nathan and my best friend Akala.
I felt the life go from Max and knew I wouldn’t be far behind. I tried to reach for my phone that had fell from my pocket, only meters away. When I saw a dark hand, it held it out to me, I took it and burst into tears. Akala sat next to me and held me “Ring him” was all she said.
So I did. I made my last phone call. It took forever for him to answer, he was so excited to see who it was he purred “hello baby”.
“Jakob, don’t talk, just listen to me, I don’t have long”. I heard the sharp intake of breath. “Max and I have been bitten by an Eastern Brown snake. Max is dead. Akala is with me. Jakob, I want you to know I love you. I always will, and I will be watching you and Blane from afar. I want you to get on with life, but never forget me. Look after our son, for both of us. Tell Lizzy and Nathan I love them”.
“NO” Jakob screamed at me “Chloe, for god sakes just hold on, I will be there soon. You cant leave me, you just cant” he cried. I could feel myself slipping “Jakob” I whispered “I am dying. I love you with all my heart and soul. I will always be with you”. The last words I heard him say were “Chloe, please hold on, I love you……”
I couldn’t hold the phone anymore, it dropped from my grasp.
As I slipped into darkness I saw Akala’s sad eyes as she whispered to me “I will look after all of them for you Chloe”
Time has no meaning for me anymore. So I can’t tell you how long it has been since I died. Daddy is at my side, while max is at our feet.
It is the day of my funeral. I am watching my family cry. I tell them not to be sad, because I have never been happier. I go over to Jakob and put my hand on his face. He moves back slightly, I could swear he saw me. Maybe he did.
I look over to my sister, her eyes are red and puffy, Nathan is standing at her side.
A man I have never seen before is standing in front of them, he is talking, though I choose not to hear his words
Nathan, Jakob and Akala’s 2 older sons step towards my coffin. Sobs rack my Lizzy’s little body. She jumps up from her chair and moves towards the men she is yelling “No. don’t burry her. Someone go and get her. She isn’t dead”. Another man takes over for Nathan as he walks to Lizzy, he catches her as she falls.
Jakob’s tears fall onto the wood as they lower my body. Jakob falls to his knees “Chloe” he whispers “I am so sorry. I am sorry I ever let you work on the farm on your own. I am sorry I said yes. I am sorry I didn’t get to you fast enough to get you help” He pounds the ground. Akala walks up to him and touches him on the shoulder. Jakob stands up, Akala hugs him.
Daddy comes to my side, I look at him “Chloe, its time to go” he says to me.
I smile and take his hand. We start to walk away, back to where we came from. I stop and take another look at my family. I smile, knowing eventually they will be ok.
I blow a kiss to Jakob and my infant son as they fade from my vision.
