Chapter twenty-six(Jace’s life)
“Thanks for taking care of my post!” Rebecca declared as she came through the door.
“Yeah, no worries.” I said, distracted. My mind was still on Indi and the guy she was with.
“I see you know Indiana.” Rebecca said, smiling.
I was still slightly distracted. “Who?”
“Indiana…she was driving the red BMW.” Rebecca prompted.
“Oh yeah,” I replied, coming back to the moment. “Who was that guy she was with?” I questioned, hoping it sounded innocent.
“Oh! You will eventually get to know everyone. That was Leif, a good friend of hers. He comes around often and has access without question.”
I attempted to keep the anger from my voice. “He was all over her.”
“Yeah, he is a nice kid, but a complete ladies man. I think they did date for a while, but are just friends now.” She shrugged.
The relief I felt was instant. “Ah, right.”
“I wouldn’t worry about it, you will get to know them all eventually,” She replied, misunderstanding my relief. “Oh, by the way, Dave needs to see you. I think he may need you to stay longer if you can. We are short of staff tonight.”
“Oh, ok. Thanks,” I gave Rebecca a small smile before leaving the small room to head over to Dave.
I was walking into Dave’s office when Indi came out, not watching were she was going.
She clumsily walked into my chest. I felt my heart race as I grabbed her upper arms to steady her.
“Sorry,” She mumbled, not looking up. It was almost as if she was distracted.
“It’s ok, Indi,” I said to her, instantly wanting to pull her closer to me and kiss her. The smell of her shampoo quickly reached my nose, but she didn’t look up or even acknowledge her call of name. She just moved around me, still looking down. I felt like an idiot, and should have known she wouldn’t remember me. I was just a summer fling after all. I watched her continue to walk away from me, and with a sigh I decided to do the same thing. There would be no point in going after her now, it would be pointless.
I was about to step into Dave’s office when I had the overwhelming urge to see her one more time. Quietly, I snuck out of the back door and around the side of the building. I watched her walk up to the main house and fell in love with her all over again. She was sexier than I remembered and she had filled out in places, making her curvy and stunning. Her black hair suited her well, it made her eyes shine. Like the first time I saw her I couldn’t tear my eyes from her. She stopped at the front door for a moment before entering the house and closing the door behind her.
Looking at the closed door, I changed my mind. I had to make her remember me, I just had to. Besides, I felt like a crazed idiot watching her from shadowed spaces. I wanted to talk to her, not stalk her.
With a sigh I gathered my thoughts and made my way back to Dave.
He was bent over some papers with the frown from earlier still on his face when I entered his office.
“You wanted to see me.” I said to his bent head.
“Oh, yes, Jace,” He announced, looking up. He motioned to the seats in front of him. “Please, sit down.” To which I did, and waited to hear what he wanted of me.
“Jace, I am not sure if you know, but I am understaffed at the moment. So many are off sick with the flu, and it’s giving me a lot of headaches. Now, I know you are due to finish your shift in an hour, but I was wondering if you could do me a huge favour,” He carried on without waiting for my answer. “I would send a senior guard but I need them here and no one else is available. I was wondering if you could accompany Indiana while she drops her friend back home. Her own private guard has left for the day. I know it’s a big ask as it means having to hang around and wait for her, but I am willing to pay you time and a half.”
I sat in silence, not sure what to say. He was handing me a chance to talk to her, a chance to
be with her, and I wanted to jump around and scream like a teenage girl for the offer he was giving me.
“It’s ok if you can’t, Jace,” He announced, mistaking my silence for rejection. “I realize that my staff
do have lives of their own.” He let out a sigh. “I guess Jack wouldn’t mind.” He mumbled to himself.
“No!” I almost yelled. “No, I can do it.” I said, calming my voice.
“Oh, that would be a huge weight off my shoulders Jace,” He smiled gratefully. “Thank you.”
“You’re welcome,” I said, trying not to grin stupidly. In just a matter of hours I would be next to her again.
“One more thing Jace, before you go,” Dave looked stern now. “Indiana means the world to me and, well, all of the staff here. If you so much as hurt a single hair on her head, then I promise I will come after you. It won’t be pretty.” He warned, stone faced.
I didn’t take his warning to heart. I knew he was saying it to protect her, and not for one minute did I doubt his warning.
“I would hurt myself before I ever hurt her.” I replied honestly.
“Good to hear,” He seemed to relax as soon as the words had left my mouth. “Now go take a break while you can!”
With a grin worthy of a Cheshire cat on my face, I left Dave’s office. I passed one of the other body guards on the way. I hadn’t met him yet but knew him as Saxson.
“Hey,” He greeted me before disappearing into Dave’s office.
I made my way to the employees lounge. I grabbed myself a drink of water and was standing at the sink finishing it off when Saxson walked in.
“Are you Jace?” He asked me.
“That would be me,” I smiled.
“Oh good, I was wondering if you could help me. My wife has it in her head that she needs to move the furniture around in my daughter’s room. Her book case is as heavy as hell and I need some muscle. Dave said he wouldn’t class this as your break time till you get back and it won’t take long.” He replied, smiling.
“Oh yeah, no worries,” I deposited my now empty glass in the sink.
“Thanks man!” Saxson said gratefully. He continued to chat about nothing in particular until we got to the front door of the house. “It’s just me!” He called out to whoever was inside.
I stopped breathing when I stepped in behind him and heard Indi’s voice. “Hey Uncle Sax,” She called in greeting.
“Will come see you in a moment, kiddo. I have to move some furniture in Kloe’s room first,” He called out, walking towards the sound of her voice. I followed him slowly. My legs had suddenly turned to a lead weight and I had trouble moving them.
“No worries,” I heard her say from the room Saxson was standing in front of.
He turned to me with a smile. “Ok, this way.”
He motioned to a set of stairs and, turning on his heel, Saxson headed for them. I followed him.
I looked into the room that Indi was in as I passed. She was sitting at the table with the guy, Leif. They both had laptops in front of them, though at that moment he was teasing her. Her cute little nose screwed up at him as a pen went flying his way.
“You are going to run out of pens soon,” He laughed to which she rolled her eyes. I wanted to stay and watch her more and to punch Leif’s lights out, but Saxson was waiting. Hurrying my steps I caught up to him on the stairs.
“You are Indiana’s uncle?” I asked, using her full name so he wouldn’t ask me questions about using her nickname.
“Yeah, that I am,” Saxson grinned. “I was lucky enough to snag the woman of my dreams and every other mans dreams,” He chuckled to himself before continuing, “I married her mum’s twin sister. You may have heard of her, her name is Ruby. She is one of the world’s top models.”
“You are Ruby’s husband?” I asked in shock and awe.
He grinned. “Yeah,”
“But they told me you were Jade’s body guard?” I was confused now.
“Yeah I am. I enjoy what I do, I didn’t want to give it up and Jade became a good friend long before I fell in love with her sister.”
He opened a door to what was definitely a child’s room. Standing in the middle of it was a lady with blonde hair and a figure to die for.
She turned when the door opened and smiled at us both. “Oh, hey!” She greeted, her smile growing larger.
I stared at her, unable able to tear my eyes from the lady, she was stunning and almost an older version of Indi with blonde hair.
Saxson turned to me, grinning. “You will get used to telling them apart, don’t worry, it takes everyone a while.” He said mistaking my hesitation.
I looked at him and was about to ask him what he meant when the lady spoke up. “Jade would be my sister. I’m Ruby,” She said, walking over to Saxson who put his arms around her.
“Oh, I am so sorry,” I mumbled, embarrassed, going along with what they had assumed was the mistake of mixing up the famous twins.
“It’s fine, don’t worry,” Ruby replied with a similar sing-song laugh to Indi. “It happens a lot. Like my husband said, you will get to know us apart if you are around us long enough. Now, am I to assume you are the muscle Sax went to find?”
“Yes ma’am. That would be me,” I smiled.
